Watch Joel’s reflections on family at Micah
Joel (also spelled Yoel) joined the Micah Project in 2010. His younger brother Axel had left the streets to join Micah in 2008, and through him, we made the connection to Joel. At the time, Joel, Axel, and their younger brother Julio lived with their mom in a seedy motel room in one of the most dangerous sectors of Tegucigalpa’s outdoor market district.
Joel and Axel’s younger brother Julio joined Micah in 2013. Joel was doing really well, and he graduated from high school in 2014. Axel eventually left Micah after a years-long struggle with addiction, and in March of 2015, he was gunned down in that same market district at the age of 19. Joel and Julio were greatly impacted by their brother’s death, and it took both of them several years to come to terms with this terrible loss.
Then, in 2022, Joel’s younger brother Julio was killed in a hit-and-run accident on his motorcycle. Julio had been flourishing as a young adult and he and Joel were extremely close. The loss of both of his brothers was devastating for Joel, but we are grateful that his Micah “brothers” have surrounded him and provided that family support he needed through difficult times of grief.
As he reflects in the video above “I believe God took my brothers, but at the same time, He gave me many brothers through Micah.”

After twenty-five years of ministry, we recently completed one of the most comprehensive evaluations in Micah’s history, asking what kind of lasting impact we are having, what is helping young men flourish, and where we still need to grow. Throughout this year’s campaign, we’ll share some of what we learned alongside powerful stories from Micah graduates that bring those findings to life.

Watch Hector’s reflections on how his faith grew at Micah
Hector's childhood was marked by heartbreaking loss. After his mother died in a car accident, his father lost a leg and struggled to provide for the family. Hector eventually followed his older brother onto the streets, where he spent three years addicted to yellow glue. His older brother was later killed while still living on the streets, and Hector would eventually lose his father and stepmother as well, leaving him with no immediate family except for the Micah Project.
Hector joined Micah in 2008 after spending six or seven years on the streets. His journey wasn't always easy, and at one point he decided to return to the streets. Michael and Becca Bell went after him and brought him back, a moment Hector still remembers as an act of love and one of the reasons he describes Micah as both a family and a blessing.
Today, Hector is married to Dayanna, has a young daughter, Meredith, and works at Micah caring for and mentoring the younger boys.
As he reflects in the video above, “When I came to Micah, my life changed completely. God changed my life.”
